Hostel or Budget Hotel in Florence? The Honest Comparison for Travellers on a Budget
Quick answer: if you travel alone and want to spend the least, a hostel dorm bed is still the cheapest option. If there are two or more of you, do the sum per person: a private room in a budget hotel with a bathroom, air conditioning and breakfast included often costs the same or less, with no stranger in the next bed. The hostel wins on one thing: the lowest price for one person and the company. The budget hotel wins on everything else, provided you do not pay more than you need to. The point is to work out which of the two situations you are in.
The sum per person: when the private room costs the same
The right comparison is not “hostel bed versus hotel room” but price per person per night, everything included. Three typical cases:

It is not only the bed next to a stranger. It is the shared bathroom in the morning when everyone has a nine o’clock train, the suitcase in a locker, the phone charging under the pillow, the light switched on at two in the morning, the silence that depends on whoever comes in after you. For one night passing through it is bearable; for three nights in Florence, with long days on foot, sleep becomes the most valuable thing in the trip.
A private room solves all of it at once: a closed door, your own bathroom, air conditioning, daily cleaning and a generous breakfast before you head out.
When the hostel is the right choice

- you travel alone on a minimal budget and a bed is all you need;

- you stop for one night in transit and leave early;
- you want to cook rather than eat out.
