Cheap Hotels Near Florence Train Station: The Honest Alternatives to Santa Maria Novella
Quick answer: hotels right outside Santa Maria Novella station are handy for a dawn train, but they cost more, are noisier and often have small rooms. Ten minutes by tram you reach the Oltrarno: bigger rooms, quiet evenings, breakfast included and lower prices. Hotel Firenze 2000 is on Viale Raffaello Sanzio, at the Paolo Uccello stop on the T1, with a 24-hour reception for late arrivals.
“Hotel near the train station” is one of the most common searches from people coming to Florence by rail. It makes sense: you arrive with luggage, want to drop it fast and leave without fuss. But near the station does not mean near Florence: the Duomo is a 10-minute walk from Santa Maria Novella, the Oltrarno twenty. Before you book, it pays to compare what you actually get, and this guide does that with real figures and without promising what we do not have.
What “near the station” really means
Santa Maria Novella sits in the heart of the city: any hotel in the centre is under twenty minutes on foot. The difference between “opposite the station” and “ten minutes by tram” comes down to three things:

If your train leaves at six in the morning and you are staying one night, the station makes sense. For two nights or more, most of our guests prefer to pay less and sleep better, using a tram that runs every few minutes.
From the station to the hotel, step by step
The route is the same one described in our car-free Florence guide:
- Leave the station and follow the signs to the tram stops in the Santa Maria Novella area.
- Take the T1 towards Villa Costanza. The opposite direction, Careggi, heads north: check the display before boarding.
- Get off at Paolo Uccello. The tram passes Porta al Prato–Leopolda and runs alongside the Cascine park.
- Walk to Viale Raffaello Sanzio 16: about nine minutes according to the maps, a little more with luggage.
Tickets. The Autolinee Toscane city ticket covers 90 minutes on trams and buses: from the ticket office, the app, or a contactless card on board. The current price is on the Autolinee Toscane website.
By taxi. About ten minutes from the station; useful if there are four of you with luggage or your train gets in very late.
On foot. About half an hour along the avenues and across the Arno: pleasant without bags, less so with them.
From the airport. The T2 links Peretola with the station area; change there to the T1. One ticket covers the 90 minutes.
Late arrival or early departure: how it works
Train in at 11 pm? Reception is open 24 hours and check-in runs from 14:00 to midnight. After midnight there is a €20 supplement to be agreed beforehand: send us your train time and we will be waiting.
Leaving at dawn? The sweet and savoury buffet breakfast is served every morning; if your train leaves before the breakfast room opens, tell us the evening before. On departure day you can leave your luggage at the hotel and explore Florence until train time.
Who should pick the station, who should pick the Oltrarno
- One night, dawn train, heavy bags: look opposite the station and accept the price and the noise.
- A weekend or longer as a couple: Oltrarno. Quiet evenings, the trattorias of Santo Spirito, Ponte Vecchio on foot. See the Double Room.
